Valipac and Verpact guarantee effective recycling of plastic waste

Valipac and Verpact joined forces and set up a joint auditing system for recyclers of plastic outside the EU. That system allows them to verify that non-European recyclers are recycling Belgian and Dutch packaging waste according to European regulations.

Valipac is the Belgian corporate packaging management organisation, and Verpact is its Dutch counterpart. Valipac has spent the past three years setting up a system to track plastic waste and carry out audits of recyclers in Turkey and Southeast Asia. With stricter European rules on plastic waste exports on the horizon, Verpact has joined that initiative, and Valipac and Verpact are entering into a cooperation agreement. This is possible because plastic waste exported outside the EU follows the same routes in the Low Countries.

The local recyclers not only have to comply with local licensing legislation, but also with applicable European, Belgian and Dutch environmental standards, health and safety regulations. Thanks to the joint audit system, they can enable the tracking of packaging waste from Dutch and Belgian companies. This will allow them to better identify the final destinations of packaging waste outside the EU and to carry out more targeted checks at local recyclers.

This agreement is the beginning of a broader partnership with organisations in other European countries.
