Who steers what at Flanders Circular?
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a strategy that was developed to integrate the environmental impact equivalent to goods throughout their life-cycle into the market price of the product itself. As a response to the problem of the ever-growing, massive accumulations of waste, various countries have outlined a waste policy whereby producers bear responsibility for collecting products that users no longer need, or take partial responsibility for financing the recovery and recycling systems.
Various organisations in Flanders successfully collect and recycle a range of waste flows. Examples of Flemish EPR initiatives include Recupel (electrical and electronic equipment), Bebat (used batteries), Recytyre (tyres), Fost Plus (household packaging waste), etc.
