Why import or export wood when you can create fantastic design in your own country with homegrown wood? At Sonian Wood Coop they apply the principle from tree to table: from trees from the Sonian forest to unique furniture, in collaboration with users and partners.
Woodworking company, design studio, gallery, the Sonian Wood Coop is it all. At the heart of this Brussels-based cooperative, you will find wood from the Sonian Forest, transformed into unique, sustainable homegrown designs in collaboration with partners and users.
The wood comes from trees that are diseased, old or fallen. And although they are at the end of their lives, they are not the least. After all, the Sonian Forest was recognized (in part) as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. It is the only piece of natural world heritage in our country and is part of a group of recognized forests worldwide that currently account for 98,000 hectares of protected area.
The cooperative therefore sees it as its task to ensure that all steps in the process - harvesting, milling, drying and so on - are as sustainable, local and qualitative as possible. They have their own specialized workshop where they design their own projects. But just as often they collaborate with other designers, architects and artists. Most recently, they entered into a new collaboration with Brussels-based Rotor DC, resulting in beautiful parquet floors.
