Living in a renovated and green courthouse

Making your bed, loading the dishwasher and barbecuing in an old courthouse. Ever thought about it? For more than 50 households it will soon be reality. They will live in the renovated 'Courthouse' on the Havermarkt in Hasselt. The market square around the building will also be greened.

From heritage to luxury spaces
For 15 years, the doors of the courthouse on the Havermarkt remained closed to the general public. Until project developers Kolmont and Tans Urban Landmarks bought the historic building in 2018. Their goal? To convert the 1937 heritage building into (luxury) apartments, offices and hospitality. Zesth Architects and Architectenbureau Michel Janssen came up with the design.

Renovate with respect for the past
Works have been in full swing since October 2024. The 3 main steps of the redevelopment: dismantling, rehabilitation and recuperation. Without the building losing its charm. The outer shell will receive an extra layer of insulation, while the original facade will be preserved. The foyer remains the entrance hall. And the project developers are reusing as many building materials as possible. On the site itself or in another project.

Complete softening of Havermarkt
In addition to the construction of a large courtyard garden, the neighborhood is also getting a green makeover. The building promoters are investing almost 100,000 euros to soften the Havermarkt and provide it with trees. This will have two advantages: it will provide the neighborhood with 'natural air conditioning' and purify the air. In 2027, the first residents will be allowed to explore their new neighborhood.
