Fietsatelier Mechelen (Bicycle workshop)

A social concept in the City of Dyle

Social added value on two wheels: that is the Fietsatelier in Mechelen, an initiative of the non-profit organisation ECOSO. Much more than just a bicycle repair shop or sales outlet, the Fietsatelier is a social employment place where people are busy tinkering with (second-hand) bicycles and a future in the regular labour market.

The Fietsatelier has become a household name in Mechelen since its start-up in 2004. You can buy there (electric) second-hand bikes and A-class bikes from E-bis (ex-lease bikes) at friendly prices. You can also have your own bike repaired there or hire a bike to explore the city. And Mechelen residents with a physical disability can rent an electric wheelchair transport bike for free, thanks to a collaboration with Stad Mechelen.

But even more important than the offer is the social added value. The initiator is ECOSO, the organisation that also runs the Kringwinkels, the Houtatelier and Foodsavers. All of them employ people who have difficulty finding a job on the regular labour market. ECOSO organises training, preparing them for a professional future.

So too in the Fietsatelier, especially since the move to the new location on Rode Kruisplein in Mechelen. They share the location with E-bis, which takes over, refurbishes and sells high-quality bikes that are at the end of their contract with leasing companies. By working on qualitative and mostly electric bikes, the employees of the Fietsatelier learn the right skills and move on faster.
