Boemerang: takeout without waste

Mechelen-based start-up Boemerang wants to get rid of disposable packaging. With an efficient, local system, they are putting reusable takeout packaging on the (menu) map.

Reusable takeaway packaging
Every year in Belgium up to 16.6 million pizza boxes are thrown away: good for 70 soccer fields of cut down forests. According to Boemerang of Mechelen, this can be done differently. What began with the development of a reusable pizza box has grown into a total concept that aims to make reusable take-out packaging the new standard.

Efficient logistics organization
From the Green Deal Anders Verpakt (an initiative of OVAM, Fevia, Comeos, the VIL, Detic) and with the support of the City of Mechelen, several strategic partners joined forces. Kingslize Pizza takes care of the logistics, MIVAS vzw cleans the packaging and the Lokeren-based Avamoplast developed the first reusable pizza box.

The main activity of the start-up is the efficient logistics organization. Through an open ecosystem, all catering businesses in Mechelen can participate with their own packaging. These can be easily returned to all participating businesses. Moreover, the system is app-less and consumers do not have to sign up anywhere either. Boemerang works with a QR code to return the paid deposit. That tastes like more!
