Flies make raw materials from waste

The company Millibeter uses black soldier-flies to convert waste and fertiliser into raw materials for the chemical industry and animal feed. Once the procedure is well developed, the black soldier-fly could make us less dependent on things like soya, fish-meal and palm oil – products that we currently import en masse from areas where the natural world is suffering hugely under their production. At present, Millibeter is using a test system to turn approximately 100 kilos of waste into 20 to 30 kilos of larvae a day. The larvae contain very usable fats, proteins, and chitin, a basic raw material for many products including cosmetics.
